Tips
🥤Tap Water: You cannot drink tap water, it’s desalinated. Bottled water is readily available.
🛞 Rentals: The best rental option would be a scooter. Avoid ATVs and Quadbikes as there have been many fatal accidents with tourists.
🌞 Season: Santorini gets most visits during the summer. The best period to visit will be April-May and September-October if you’re looking to avoid the heavy crowds. Do not visit in winter, most attractions will be closed.
🚕 Taxis: Avoid taxis as tourists tend to be overcharged by the drivers. Buses are a great alternative. Click here to see the time-table (it’s in Greek so use Google translate). Altenatively, copy-paste “ΚΤΕΛ ΣΑΝΤΟΡΙΝΗΣ” on Google and click the first link. NOTE: Cards may not be accepted in the bus.
🍴 Food: Steer clear of restaurants that resort to catfishing at the entrance; they’re likely to disappoint.
👥 Expect Crowds: Oia and Fira get very crowded, especially around sunsets. Expect lines for photo opportunities.
🥵 Prepare for Heat: It can get very hot during the summer months without much shade available.
🏧 Use ATMs Wisely: Find ATMs at the bus terminal; use bank ATMs to avoid high fees.
📶 Cell Signal: Expect poor cell signal in narrow alleys.
👟 Footwear: Wear comfortable, non-slip shoes; avoid high heels and slides.
♿ Mobility: Not suitable for those with mobility issues due to steep, narrow paths and staircases.
👙 Pack Light: Pack minimal luggage to navigate the steep streets and staircases easily.
Understanding Santorini
Each part of the island offers unique experiences and attractions. Here’s a breakdown of the different parts of Santorini.
Oia – The Blue-Domed Paradise
Oia (pronounced ee-A), the part of Santorini you see on Instagram and Pinterest is located on the northwestern tip of the island and is the most iconic and photographed village in Santorini. It is famous for its white-washed houses, blue-domed churches, and narrow cobblestone streets.
Oia is ideal for romantic getaways, with spots for candle-lit dinners and iconic sunset views, making it perfect for honeymoons. It is also the most expensive part of Santorini. Summer room rates average around €500 per night. This often includes staying in an iconic cave house with sea views. While there aren’t many activities in Oia, there are quite a few things to do to keep yourself busy.
While Oia lacks a beach, you can descend 300 steps to Amoudi Bay.

For a quieter experience, especially during the early season, head towards the end of the beach, nestled against the mountain, where you can enjoy the serenity without the distraction of umbrellas and noise.

The Best Beaches
Perissa, Kamari and Perivolos Beach: These are the most accessible (and busy) beaches with long stretches of flat sand, beach bars and restaurants.
While Kamari (2 km long) may be more crowded as it’s smaller, Perivolos (3 km long) and Perissa (7 km long) offer more space.
Perissa, Perivolos, and Kamari are all located on the southeastern coast of Santorini and are relatively close to each other. The distance between Perissa and Perivolos is only about 1 kilometer, while the distance between Perivolos and Kamari is approximately 4 kilometers.
Perissa Beach is easily accessible by car or bus from Fira, which is about a 30-minute drive away. You can also take a boat excursion from the old port in Fira to Perissa.
Vlychada Beach: Less popular but probably the most beautiful beach on the island. It is much less crowded and offers a beautiful landscape with black sand. The end of the beach is nudist.
Vlychada Beach is situated on the southern coast of Santorini, close to the village of Vlychada. To access Vlychada Beach, you can drive or take a bus from Fira or Kamari. The bus ride to Vlychada Beach from Fira typically takes around 30 to 40 minutes.
Red Beach (Kokkini Paralia): Renowned for its striking red cliffs and volcanic landscape, Red Beach is accessible by boat or a short hike. Do not go swimming in the Red Beach, as landslides are frequent.
To get to Red Beach, take a bus from Fira to Akrotiri, the village nearest to Red Beach. From Akrotiri, you can either walk 15 mins through the trail leads you through a rocky path with some uneven terrain or take a boat tour.
White Beach: Situated adjacent to Red Beach, White Beach offers a striking contrast with its towering white cliffs and pebbled shores. Accessible only by boat or a hiking trail from Red Beach, White Beach is known for its secluded and tranquil atmosphere.
Visitors can enjoy swimming in the crystal-clear waters or simply relax on the shore while admiring the dramatic scenery. Snorkeling enthusiasts will also find plenty to explore beneath the surface, with colorful marine life and underwater caves to discover.
